Pally vs Hermes Agent
An agent you run, configure and teach, or an assistant that works the first time you text it.
Checked October 11, 2026 · Hermes Agent is a free, MIT-licensed Nous Research project in rapid development. Nous also sells Hermes Cloud, a hosted, always-on instance. See their site for the latest.
So, Hermes Agent or Pally?

The case for Hermes Agent
Pick Hermes Agent if you want to own the stack and shape the agent yourself: choose the model, install the skills, and watch it get better at your work over months. Self-host it free, or let Hermes Cloud keep it running for about fifty cents a day plus usage. It's MIT-licensed, backed by a lab with real open-model credentials, and the most interesting self-hosted bet on where agents are going.
The case for Pally
Pick Pally if you want the work done with no setup: no model to pick, no skills to install, no credits to top up. Pally answers a number you give out, books restaurants and appointments as well as travel, checks out with your payment wallet, keeps a CRM of your contacts and watches your WhatsApp. With its Mac app, it watches iMessage, LinkedIn and X DMs too. It's free.

Where Hermes Agent shines.
It gets smarter
The learning loop is the signature: Hermes creates skills from experience, improves them as it works, and builds a deepening model of who you are across sessions. An agent you've run for six months is meaningfully better than the one you installed.
Host it, or let Nous host it
Run it free on a $5 VPS or serverless infrastructure that costs almost nothing when idle, with memory and data in files you control. Or deploy Hermes Cloud in about a minute and Nous keeps it running, for about fifty cents a day plus usage.
Message it from almost anywhere
Hermes connects to about 30 messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, Slack, Signal, Discord, Teams and SMS, and reaches iMessage through Photon without a Mac. Pally keeps to a few: your texts, Telegram, email and a phone call.
A real research lab behind it
Nous Research earned its reputation with the Hermes open-model series, and the agent is MIT-licensed, works with any model, and moves fast. Coming from OpenClaw, one command previews and imports your persona, memory, skills, model settings and channel tokens.
What each one costs.

Hermes Agent
Free · Cloud $0.51/day + usage
Hermes Agent is free, MIT-licensed open source when you host it yourself. You bring the server and the model, so costs depend on your setup. Hermes Cloud hosts an always-on instance for you: Standard is $0.51 a day while running and $0.03 a day stopped, Pro is $0.99 a day, and inference and tools are billed on top from prepaid Nous credits. Nous Portal plans run from free to $200 a month.
Pally
Free
Pally is free, with almost unlimited usage limits. No waitlist or invitation. Cloud Mac is a paid add-on. Every connection, every automation, calls, and its own number and email.
Switching from Hermes Agent.
Pally's setup is texting a number, and connecting accounts is tapping a link it sends you. No account to create first.
Connect your email and calendar first
Gmail, Outlook, or iCloud Mail, and your calendars. Pally flags what needs you, summarizes the rest, and checks availability, books and moves events.
Then add the rest
Slack, Notion, Linear, GitHub, Drive, your own WhatsApp, your bank, and your own MCP servers. Save logins to its password vault and Pally runs web errands in a browser with them. Add it to group chats, with per-capability grants controlling what it shares from your accounts.
What carries over
Your accounts: Pally works from the email, calendars, and apps you already use. It remembers the people in your life and what matters to them, and you can browse and edit that memory in its web dashboard.
Pally vs Hermes Agent FAQ.
What is Hermes Agent?
Hermes Agent is Nous Research's free, MIT-licensed AI agent. Its signature is a learning loop: it creates skills from experience, improves them during use, and builds a model of you across sessions. It works with any model you choose, such as Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI or your own endpoint, and connects to about 30 messaging platforms, from Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp and Signal to iMessage through Photon. It has a browser, code execution and a skills system: the raw material for almost anything, once you set it up.
What is Hermes Cloud?
Hermes Cloud is Nous's hosted version: a dedicated, always-on Hermes instance you deploy in about a minute, with no server to run. You choose a name, a region and a model, add Nous credits, and connect channels such as Telegram, Discord, Slack and email from its dashboard. Inference and tools are billed by use. Pally needs none of that: you text a number, and it's free.
Is Hermes Agent free?
The self-hosted software is free. You supply the server and the model access, so costs depend on your setup; Nous says a $5 VPS will do. Hermes Cloud costs $0.51 a day while running on the Standard size, plus inference and tools. Nous Portal plans, which bundle model access with tools such as search and a cloud browser, run from free to $200 a month.
Can Hermes make phone calls?
It can place them. An optional telephony skill makes outbound AI calls through Bland, Vapi or Twilio and can press phone-menu digits, but it doesn't answer calls. Pally does both: it calls businesses, waits on hold and gets through phone menus, and gives you a number to hand out that it picks up, handles and reports back on.
Does Hermes train on my data?
Self-hosted with your own model keys, Hermes sends nothing to Nous, and your model provider's terms apply. Through Nous Portal, Nous may store and train on your prompts and tool data unless you turn on Privacy Mode. Pally trains on conversations by default until you turn it off in settings, and never trains on your connected email, calendar or other accounts.
How does Hermes compare to OpenClaw?
They're the two big self-hosted agents, both free and MIT-licensed, and Hermes can import an OpenClaw setup. Hermes bets on the self-improving loop and offers a hosted option, Hermes Cloud; OpenClaw has no hosted tier but has mobile companion apps. Against Pally, the trade is the same for both: total ownership and extensibility, against an assistant that's already assembled, with calls answered for you, checkout and bookings included.
Which is better, Pally or Hermes Agent?
Hermes Agent fits people who want to choose their model, skills, and hosting; the software is free, but you supply the server and model access, or pay for Hermes Cloud. Pally is free and fits calls, bookings, and inbox help without that setup.
So how does Pally make money?
Pally plans to earn a fee from merchants when you buy through it. Merchants can never pay to change what Pally recommends to you. Cloud Mac, an optional add-on, is paid.
